Amp (Ampere)
The Ampere (symbol: A) is the unit of measurement for electric current.
Think of electricity as water flowing through a pipe. If voltage (measured in Volts) is the pressure of the water, the current, measured in Amperes, is the flow, that is, the amount of water that passes through a point every second.
In the context of audio, current is important for powering equipment.
Power amplifiers, for example, need a significant current to move the speakers and produce high-volume sound. Equipment fuses are also rated in Amperes (e.g., 1A, 2A) and serve to protect the circuit if the current becomes too high. Current can be Direct Current (DC), flowing in one direction, or Alternating Current (AC), constantly changing direction.bottom of page
