Balance

The word Balance has several meanings in the world of audio. The two main ones are:

1. Stereo Balance (Balance Control)

Refers to the volume distribution between the left (L) and right (R) channels of a stereo signal. A Balance Control adjusts the relative level between these two channels. Turning it to the left reduces the volume of the right channel. Turning it to the right reduces the volume of the left channel. It is different from a Pan control, which in a stereo signal would position both channels to one side. The Balance simply adjusts the volume of each side of the existing stereo pair. Mix Balance In this context, "balance" describes the volume relationship between all instruments, vocals, and elements in a mix. Finding a good mix balance is one of the most important tasks in mixing. It means adjusting the faders of each channel so that all elements sound clear, cohesive, and musically pleasing, without one instrument masking or unduly overpowering another.
