Blumlein Array

The Blumlein Pair (Blumlein Array) is a stereo microphone technique that uses two microphones with a figure-8 polar pattern.

Created by Alan Blumlein in the 1930s, this technique seeks to capture an extremely realistic stereo image.

The two microphones are positioned at the same point (in coincidence), with their diaphragms as close as possible to each other, and angled at 90 degrees, forming a '+'.

Because the diaphragms are in the same place, the sound reaches both at the same time, eliminating time differences.

or phase. The stereo image is created solely by the differences in intensity (volume) that each microphone picks up, depending on the direction from which the sound comes.

The result is a recording with an excellent sense of depth, space, and precise location of the instruments. However, it also picks up a lot of room sound because of the figure-8 pattern, requiring an environment with good acoustics.
