BNC

BNC is a type of bayonet-lock connector used for professional digital video and audio connections.

The BNC is a coaxial connector known for its secure locking mechanism.

Instead of just plugging it in, you insert it and twist ("plug and twist"), which prevents the cable from accidentally disconnecting.

Although it is most famous in video applications, in the world of professional audio the BNC connector is widely used for:

  • Word Clock: Transmitting the synchronization signal (clock) between digital audio equipment.

  • MADI: In one of its versions, the MADI multichannel digital audio format uses cables with BNC connectors.

  • AES3id: A variation of the AES/EBU standard that uses 75-ohm coaxial cables with BNC connectors instead of XLR.
