Boom

Boom is a mechanical arm used to position a microphone, usually above or at a distance from a sound source.

The term applies to various types of microphone stands, but the idea is always the same: to extend the reach and allow for more flexible positioning. The most common types are:

  1. Boom Arm): It is the articulated arm that attaches to the top of a common microphone stand. It allows you to position the microphone horizontally or at an angle, which is essential for miking instruments such as drums, guitar, or a piano.

  2. Fishpole: It is a long, telescopic pole, usually made of carbon fiber, used by sound operators in film and TV to capture actors' dialogue by positioning the microphone above them, outside the camera's frame.

  3. Studio Boom: These are large stands, often on wheels or suspended, used in TV and film studios to remotely and precisely position microphones over a scene.
