Cardioid

A Cardioid is the most common polar pattern (the shape of the pickup area) for unidirectional microphones.

Its name comes from the inverted "heart" shape of its sensitivity area.

A cardioid microphone picks up sound primarily from the front, rejecting sounds coming from behind. Its characteristics are: Maximum Sensitivity: In front of the microphone (0°). Reduced Sensitivity: On the sides (90°), with a volume drop of approximately 6 dB. Maximum Rejection: At the back of the microphone (180°), where it is least sensitive. Due to its ability to focus on the sound source in front of it and reject ambient sound, background noise, and stage monitors, the cardioid pattern is extremely versatile and the ideal choice for most studio and on-screen applications. live performances, from vocals and instruments to lectures.
