Close-Miking
Close-Miking is a technique that involves positioning a microphone very close to the sound source.
The main goal is to capture as much of the instrument's direct sound as possible and as little ambient sound (the room) or sound from other nearby instruments (bleed) as possible.
This technique results in a "dry," present sound with a lot of detail. It is the basis of modern popular music recording (rock, pop, electronic, etc.), as it allows total control of each instrument in the mix.
Each drum piece, for example, is usually closely miked so that the sound engineer can equalize, compress, and adjust the volume of each one independently. In classical music recordings, the same technique is sometimes called "Accent Miking," used to give a little boost to a soloist or a specific section within the orchestra.
