The Reussen Shield, also known as double spiral mesh shielding, is a superior type of protection against electrostatic and radio frequency interference used in high-quality microphone cables. Unlike common braided meshes, this construction uses two distinct layers of copper wires wound in a spiral around the central conductors. The secret to this technique is that the layers are wound in opposite directions, meaning they are counter-rotating. This ensures that even when the cable is severely bent or twisted, the shielding remains closed and does not open gaps that would allow noise to enter, while maintaining exceptional flexibility that facilitates handling on stage or in the studio.
