Dropout

Dropout refers to a sudden and momentary loss of the audio signal during playback or recording. In the context of analog magnetic tapes, this phenomenon is generally caused by physical defects in the tape's oxide layer, such as scratches and creases, or by the accumulation of dirt and residue on the playback head that prevents perfect magnetic contact. The sonic effect is perceived as a brief interruption or a sharp drop in volume, mainly affecting high frequencies. The incidence of dropouts is statistically lower and less noticeable on wider tape formats and those operating at higher speeds, as the magnetic contact area is larger and more stable.
