Ducking

Ducking is a dynamic processing technique where the volume level of one audio signal is automatically reduced whenever a second signal exceeds a certain threshold. Although technically performed most of the time through a compressor configured with an external input called side-chain, the term describes the final auditory effect of this lowering action. The most classic and functional example occurs in broadcasting and voice-over, where background music instantly lowers its volume as soon as the announcer starts speaking and returns to normal level when they stop. In modern music production, especially in electronic and pop music, ducking is used creatively and rhythmically to make the bass and other instruments make room every time the kick drum hits, creating a pulsating sensation and impact known as the pumping effect.
