Enhancer
An Enhancer is a psychoacoustic processor designed to impart clarity, definition, and sparkle to audio material, effectively removing the muffled sensation from dull recordings. It goes beyond the capabilities of a standard equalizer because, while an EQ can only boost frequencies that are already present in the source, an Enhancer can synthesize new spectral content. It achieves this through a combination of techniques such as dynamic equalization, which boosts high frequencies only during louder passages to maintain a clean signal, and harmonic generation. Harmonic generation analyzes the fundamental frequencies of the audio and synthesizes mathematically related upper harmonics that were missing from the original signal. Additionally, phase shifting is often used to alter the phase relationship of the signal and widen the perceived stereo image. Although often confused with Exciters, Enhancers typically lean more towards dynamic EQ and phase manipulation, while Exciters rely more on controlled harmonic distortion.
